What does a Firewall do?
Most people have heard the term 'Firewall' at one time or another. And most people know that firewalls are something to do with protecting computers and/or networks from nasty things like viruses (or people!) that are roaming the Internet. Firewalls can also control access to the Internet from your computer.

When you have a connection to the Internet, you have created an open door into your personal PC. Whether you dial-up or use a broadband connection to get to the Internet, you could be putting your machine and your files at risk.

What is a Firewall?
A firewall is used to prevent unauthorised access to a comuter or network. A firewall is a piece of hardware, or it can be a software programme, that examines information passing to and from your computer or network and discards or denies it access it if it does not meet certain criteria.
