a file server allows you to store all data centrally. This allows for better administration of your files, sharing of files, easier backup of critical data, and for files to be stored more securely than on standalone pcs.

There are various options available for backup of data to media such as cd roms, tapes and zips or to removable hard-drives or dedicated backup servers. It is important to always keep a copy of data securely off-site or in a fireproof safe.

mail servers

An in-house mail server will allow better control of your company email. All email will be received by a central server and then forwarded onto the appropriate person within your company. This allows for instant internal email as there is no need for the email to use the internet - it hits the mail server and is distributed instantly.

Mail server software can also allow better virus protection. A virus can be detected and dealt with before it enters your network therefore reducing the risk of infection. Potentially dangerous files e.g. executable files can also be stopped from entering your network as can emails from specified domains.

Spam (unwanted email) can also be more effectively dealt with using mail server software.

firewalls

web servers

Ideal for hosting your company intranet. Company websites are often better hosted with a professional hosting company. This generally keeps costs down.

virus servers

For larger organisations a dedicated virus server is essential. This allows for virus software updates/definitions to be accessed regularly and distributed to all computers on the network therefore saving time and reducing risk of infection on computers with out of date virus software.

It is not always necessary to have a separate virus server - this can be incorporated on another server.

wireless networks

allows users to send and receive data securely without the inconvenience of cables. Ideal for laptop users who move around the office and need to access file servers, printers and the Internet.

virtual private networks

vpn's allow remote users to access your network securely via the Internet.

A VPN is an especially effective means of exchanging critical information for employees working remotely in branch offices, at home, or on the road.

ftp servers

An ftp server allows remote users to access files on your system using the Internet. This maybe useful if you wish to allow your clients to access files that are too large to place on your website for example, presentations, brochures, software updates. An ftp server is not recommended for storage/access of confidential information.
